I saw a Sufi proverb that says “I searched for God and found only myself. I searched for myself and found only God.” That seems to sum it up pretty nicely. The Bible tells us that we are the Son of God, the Son of God is Christ, and Christ is God.
So if we take those statements as true then we could ask ourselves what is it that we are bringing to God in every minute of every day. Do you bring lilies or do you bring thorns? Do you look for God in you? Do you act from God in you? These are no small questions.
Would you bring God a gift of a television or would you bring God the gift of Love? It seems all too common that we attempt to buy love and acceptance to appease our own guilt over not giving our time and love to that person. Of course we like nice things, we like beauty, but our overriding need is love and acceptance.
There are so many ways that we try to get love and acceptance from others. None of them work, of course, since it is our own love and acceptance that we are after. Once we have that then we are not concerned with what others think of us.
This is a difficult place for most of us to reach. How do we get there? I started by letting myself be me openly a very little at a time. The more I let myself do, say, and act the way I wanted the more I liked myself. That was a revelation since I was hiding myself because I thought people wouldn’t like me the way I really am. The more I like myself the more I let myself be me. The more I let myself be me the better my life becomes in all ways.
As I go along I learn more and more about myself and my spiritual journey. And then all of a sudden I crash into what is called a dark night of the soul. That is a very difficult place to be and it causes me to doubt absolutely everything. And then, miraculously the exact right person appears to assist me, the exact right messages appear, and I come out of it. I come out of it at a new level of awareness and understanding. And I understand that the dark night of the soul is the old falling apart, crumbling and disintegrating so the new love, acceptance, awareness, and understanding can blossom in its place.
I am then able to be kinder to myself, to bring the gift of love to myself, and to give the gift of love to the God in others.
